Maj.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (CoAS), shared with the press in Abuja the that the Nigerian Army will be preparing for an upcoming celebration of 160 years in the nation. The anniversary event will serve as a platform to exhibit the army’s prowess in operations, research, and development.

During the NADCEL-2023 activities in Abuja, Maj.-Gen. Emeka Onumajuru, representing Lagbaja, the Chief of Special Services and Programmes (Army), emphasized that over the course of its 160-year existence, the Nigerian Army has undergone significant advancements in every aspect.

Highlighting the army’s pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity, Maj.-Gen. Emeka Onumajuru reiterated that the Nigerian Army is an esteemed national institution with a remarkable heritage that traces back to 1863.

He further noted that this significant milestone also commemorates the historical moment when the initial gunshot of the war resonated at Garkem, located in what is presently Cross River State.

Additionally, he emphasized that this designated date serves as a poignant reminder of the past and serves to reinforce the importance of peaceful resolution of issues instead of resorting to armed conflicts.

He said, ‘It offers the Nigerian Army an opportunity to take stock, assess its performances, interface with the public, and set goals for continued professional growth.’

‘This will enable it to better perform its constitutional roles and also compete favourably with other armies around the globe.’

‘This year’s celebration is to celebrate the Nigerian army’s achievements.’

‘It will also showcase the army’s operational activities as well as its transformational strides in innovation, research and development, civil-military relations, and technological advancement.’

‘The celebration is also aimed at projecting the Army as an instrument of national unity and development as well as highlighting its capabilities,’ he concluded.

The army holds a vital role in the nation, acting as a guardian that ensures the protection of the country from both external and internal security threats. In doing so, it safeguards the lives of its citizens and establishes a climate of peace and order. It is truly commendable to have such a longstanding institution dedicated to the defense of the nation.
