Members of the UN Security Council have appealed to Somalia’s leaders to return to the negotiating table, following the controversial extension of the president’s term by parliament.

The members have also welcomed the plan by the African Union (AU) to mediate the talks.

Somali leaders were urged to implement the 17 September 2020 agreement on an electoral framework – under which clan elders would select delegates to electoral colleges, which in turn choose federal lawmakers who then pick a president.

Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo asked the AU to lead election talks during a meeting with chairperson President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo this week.

The Somali parliament extended the president’s term by two years, a move that was rejected by two regional states and the opposition.

Somalia has failed to hold elections after disagreements between the federal government and two regional states.
