The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has come out to openly deny all the speculations that had posited that it has backed out of the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU strike.

The tertiary Institution in a statement on Wednesday by its ASUU branch Chairman, Dr. Ray Chikogu, reiterated that the chapter was irrevocably committed to executing the strike to a logical conclusion.

The statement read: “The leadership of the University of Benin Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has read with amusement, a piece of information purporting that the UNIBEN has backed out of the ongoing ASUU strike and that the university will resume normal activities on Sept.

“The branch is more than aware that the intelligentsia has a moral obligation to rescue public tertiary education.

“For us, it’s no retreat, no surrender. We have no doubts whatsoever that the verdict of history will be on the side of ASUU.”

UNIBEN urged students to disregard speculation that it has pulled out of the ongoing national strike and intends to resume academic activities.

In another report, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has said its declaration of indefinite strike after over six months of warning and rollover strikes, was meant to save public universities.

The union, in a statement, late Monday night, by its president, Emmanuel Osodeke, said it was compelled to carry out the action because it has ‘experienced a lot of deceit of the highest level in the last five and half years’ from the federal government.

It said ‘following extensive deliberations on government’s response to the resolution of 14th February, 2022 so far, NEC concluded that the demands of the union had not been satisfactorily addressed.”

‘Consequently, NEC resolved to transmute the roll-over strike to a comprehensive, total and indefinite strike action beginning from 12.01a.m. on Monday, 29th August, 2022,’ the statement read.

The full statement, tagged: ‘ASUU strikes are to save public universities‘, read:”The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) held an emergency meeting at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, Abuja on Sunday, 28th August, 2022. The meeting was called mainly to review developments since its last resolution that rolled over the nationwide strike action for another four weeks starting from 1st August, 2022.
