Court Okays Oyo Dep Gov, Olaniyan’s Impeachment Process

 Mr. Rauf Olaniyan, the Oyo State Deputy Governor is in serious trouble as an Oyo State High Court has dismissed a suit which was filed by him against his impeachment.

The Oyo State House of Assembly had a few weeks ago initiated an major impeachment process against the deputy governor which would seek to upturn his political powers coming with the deputy Governor position.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that Olaniyan had later approached the court to stop the lawmakers from impeaching him. The court has, however, dismissed the suit filed by the deputy governor.

The court presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola dismissed the suit on Thursday. The court also noted that the lawmakers have the right to remove the deputy governor from office.

Akintola while delivering his judgment on Thursday, insisted that the House of Assembly has not breached the provisions of the constitution on the removal of a governor or deputy governor.

According to Akintola, the lawmakers substantially complied with the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution on the removal process. The court said the lawmakers should continue with the removal process.

It had been previously reported that the Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has put out measures to fully restrain and halt the Oyo State House of Assembly from further impeachment processes which would be taken against the Deputy Governor of the state, Engineer Rauf Aderemi Olaniyan.

The court  had been presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola gave this order on Wednesday.

Africa Daily News, New York would also recall that the House of Assembly had few days ago commenced the impeachment process against the deputy governor.

The Assembly alleged that the deputy governor has committed some offences. This had made the deputy governor to approach the court to halt his impeachment process and call them to order. The court on Wednesday restrained the lawmakers from further impeachment process against the deputy governor.

Akintola ruled that the State Assembly should stop any removal process. The judge, in his address, adjourned the matter till Tuesday, July 5 2022.

He said that the date has been picked for continuation of hearing. He also mentioned that the adjournment was to allow the Assembly to file its reply to that of Olaniyan at the Court.
