The governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has been named the Peoples Democratic Party’s senatorial candidate for Sokoto South less than a week after stepping down for the Presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar.

Tambuwal has now shifted his hopes to become elected to the Red Chamber in 2023, representing seven Local Government Areas.

Bodinga, Dange/Shuni, Kebbe, Shagari, Tambuwal, Tureta, and Yabo are the LGAs.

Africa Daily News, New York York recalls that the governor stepped down for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the party’s presidential primary in Abuja last week.

The Chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu had visited the Governor shortly after the convention where he referred to him as the ‘Hero of the convention’.

The candidate of the party, Atiku Abubarkar had also visited him to thank him for stepping down for him when it mattered most while promising to work very closely with him to ensure the victory of the party in the February elections.

Tambuwal himself had gone on to state that his decision to step down on the day of the convention was purely out of his love for the party and desire to keep the party united.

His move came as a surprise to many pundits who thought he was a close ally of the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesome Wike.

Governor Tambuwal previously served in the House of Representatives, representing the Tambuwal/Kebbe Federal Constituency and rising to become Speaker of the House in his third term.

According to this declaration, the governor will face off against the incumbent, Senator Danbaba Dambuwa, who recently defected from the PDP to join the APC.
