The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Ewuare II took social media by storm yesterday when he made some comments on the 2023 Nigeria elections.
He made these statements when he received the Vice President of Nigeria Yemi Osinbajo at his palace some which opined that many aspirants were only seeking positions to amass wealth.
“I think you are going to give a lot of problems to other contestants. There is no gainsaying that they all probably are shivering where they are.”
Oba Ewuare listed Osinbajo’s qualities as “calmness, humility, great respect for culture and being a true man of God”.
He expressed hope that Nigeria would be better if leaders have the fear of God, “not just to go there to rape the treasury and oppress people”.
The Oba said most times, “people rushing to be president, vice president or governors, only to go there and loot the treasury, enrich themselves”.
“We want to stay here in Nigeria, enjoy the good things of life in Nigeria; not in Dubai, not in the United States and others”.
Vice President Osinbajo on his part said that he has been exposed to various areas of governance for years and also noted that he is experienced to lead Nigeria.
While he told the Oba he is in the state for political reasons, Osinbajo said he deemed it appropriate to make the Palace his first stop.
The visit to the palace, the Vice President explained, is to inform the Oba of his intention to run for president in the coming election. He also said he is in the state to consult with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
