7 killed As Bandits, Police Team Exchange Fire In Zamfara

Armed men suspected to be bandits on Tuesday attacked a team of policemen in Zonai village in Magami district, Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing no fewer than seven officers.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that the incident, which occurred in the early hours of yesterday left residents in panic over fear of attack on the community.

According to residents, the officers were returning from duty where they had mounted, a checkpoint near Zonai village along Gusau-Magami-Dansadau following frequent attacks on the community.

Details of the incident were still sketchy as at the time of filing this report.

When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Muhammad Shehu was unable to speak on the incident, saying ‘I will call you back later’.

Zamfara is one of the states in Northern Nigeria that has suffered insecurity in recent times following the activities of the bloodthirsty bandits.

Meanwhile. the Minister of Defence, Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi (retd.) has asserted that the need to follow due process was responsible for the delay in declaring bandits as terrorists.

Magashi noted that there was a procedure that needed to be completely followed before such a declaration.
