Bandits in Zamfara State on Thursday attacked a police outpost in Magami community in Gusau, Zamfara capital, reportedly seizing the phones of police officers on duty.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that Magami is one of the conflict-ravaged communities in Zamfara State.

Over the last few months, several residents have fled the community as a result of incessant attacks by terrorists.

According to Abdul Balarabe, a local journalist who reports terror attacks in the state, the gunmen arrived in the community around 3:40 pm.

He disclosed that after collecting the phones, the terrorists shot into the air before they went back into the bush.

‘Bandits attack Magami Divisional police station under Gusau LGA of Zamfara State, snatch phones and other valuables belonging to the police on duty, they also fired warning shots and escaped. The incident happened today (yesterday) around 3:40pm,’ Balarabe said in a tweet.

A community source who spoke to newsmen on the condition of anonymity said that the bandits stormed the stations with the intention of freeing one of them who was detained there.

However, the suspect had been reportedly transferred to the state police headquarters by the time they got there.

‘They collected the phones of all the officers on duty and that of one of the complainant they met there, but didn’t kill anybody,’ a source said.

When contacted, SP Muhammed Shehu, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Zamfara denied the report when contacted saying, ‘No such thing happened.’

He, however, refused to comment further when further quizzed.

A few weeks ago, Alhaji Mohammed Modi, a well-known political chieftain in Zamfara State has openly lamented that the rising spate of killings, kidnappings and maiming of innocent citizens in the state has become so embarrassing and is getting quite perplexing.

In an exclusive interview which he had granted to Newsmen in Gusau, the state capital, Modi had alsostated that it is not clear exactly what these bandits want, pointing out that all efforts being made for them to reason and surrender their arms have proved abortive.
