A Republican Ally of Joe Biden, Sen. Chris Coons who was defeated for re-nomination by a more socially conservative challenger in June when asked by CNN host Erin Burnett Tuesday evening if he’s had similar exchanges with Republican colleagues, Riggleman, who is among the eight GOP House members who have publicly congratulated Biden, replied, “Yes. And I know that’s a very blunt answer, but yes.”
As the outcome of U.S election continues to witness uncertainty with the incumbent Donald Trump refusing to concede defeat due to alleged to be voters fraud, just 12 Republican members of Congress have publicly acknowledged Biden’s victory, while at least 17 GOP senators and 49 House members have publicly refused to accept the election as a done-deal, with some echoing Trump’s unfounded claims of widespread fraud.
In another development another GOP Congressman Riggleman said “I don’t understand why we can’t just state a fact,”– adding, “In two months we’re going to have a new president and I think that’s a fact.”
After several Republican senators admitted the Georgia Senate runoffs are a motivation in their continued refusal to recognize Biden, Riggleman claims that Republicans are “afraid to go out and say something against the president where they could lose those votes.” Riggleman dismissed election fraud conspiracy theories pushed by Trump and his allies, stating, “There’s no sharpiegate, there’s no watermarks, there’s no ballots being burned,” and declaring, “We gotta stop this conspiratorial thinking… it’s just out of control.
“Riggleman claimed that in his conversations with Republican colleagues, they said “thanks for being out there, thanks for doing this” with regards to his public refusal to side with Trump on the election. “We’re even getting calls from Republicans into our office saying ‘hey, thank the Congressman. I can’t really say much out here, but thank him for just doing the right thing.’”
The President-elect on Tuesday said “I think there are enough Republicans who have spoken out,” He also admitted he’s “not a pessimist” and predicted “there will be… a larger number once the election is declared and I’m sworn in.” Biden also dismissed the importance of recognition from Republicans and the administration, calling it “not of much consequence” because the transition is already “well underway.”
