Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to refer the disagreement between his wife, Aisha, and Mamman Daura’s daughter, Fatima, to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for swift resolution.
The rights group also told the president to, alternatively, consider a quick leave of absence to resolve the issue himself. It warned that it would be unconstitutional if official time and resources were deployed by the presidency on a family feud, which might infringe on the sacred constitutional oath of office the president swore before taking office.
National Coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, reminded Buhari, in a statement yesterday in Abuja, that Nigeria was contending with massive societal, economic, security and environmental challenges that required total concentration, which might not be properly attended to amid family feud.
“Mr. President must be aware that the nation sleep-walked into the global poverty capital under his watch only last year, overthrowing India with a population of over a billion people, just as Nigeria with a disputed population of 200 million already has over 92 million citizens who are absolutely poor.
“Insecurity and instability are social evils that have threatened our existence, and millions of Nigerians feel insecure. Nigeria can’t afford to have a president whose attention is divided by unnecessary domestic squabbles of the female members of the immediate and extended families,” he stated.

It referred to The Nation newspaper, which reported that a presidency source on Monday had faulted the recent release of a video by Mamman Daura’s daughter.
“We were told that the presidency source spoke about the video, released in the wake of the rumour claiming that President Muhammadu Buhari was going to take a second wife last Friday, had shown part of the First Lady Aisha Buhari’s body shouting on the need for the Daura’s to leave an accommodation in the Villa.”
It said the influential national newspaper owned by the national leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) had told Nigerians that a presidency source, who does not want her name in print, said that the video was shot over a year ago when the president’s son, Yusuf, had power bike accident in Abuja.
