Many Nigerians are flocking to Truth Social, an alternative microblogging app, due to Twitter’s recent policy change. This new Twitter policy imposes limitations on the number of tweets users can read per day, prompting users to seek out alternative platforms.
Despite Twitter’s reversal of the policy, numerous users remain undeterred and continue to migrate to Truth Social. The withdrawal of the policy has not been satisfactory to dissuade these people from seeking refuge on the alternative microblogging platform.
Following his permanent ban from Twitter for alleged incitement of the rioters who attacked the U.S. Capitol building in January 2021, ex-U.S. President Donald Trump founded Truth Social. This connection to Trump’s controversial history has further contributed to the migration of users from Twitter to Truth Social.
Truth Social had relatively low popularity among Nigerians until Twitter’s recent announcement regarding restrictions on the number of tweets users could read in a day. This policy change prompted a shift in user preferences, leading many Nigerians to explore Truth Social as an alternative microblogging platform.
The popularity of Truth Social surged when Twitter users encountered difficulties logging into the platform due to the newly implemented restrictions.
The challenges experienced by Twitter users further propelled the rise of Truth Social as a prominent microblogging platform in the country.
Truth Social went as far as to ridicule Twitter, mocking its practices, ‘Reminder: On Truth Social you can read, posts as many truths as you want – all for free.’

@BOGbadams added, ‘Join me on Truth Social. @bogbadamosi.’
@gimbakakanda said, ‘Among all the social media platforms to adopt as an alternative to Twitter, you have chosen TRUTH Social, one founded by Donald Trump—an unabashed and documented promoter of far-right extremism.’
XTrust me, you would be better off in Elon Musk’s prison than in Trump’s penthouse,’ he said.
@MissPearls said: ‘My Mentions on Truth Social is Going Wild Already Even Before I Posted My First Truth. So, That’s It; Its Either Twitter Or Truth.’
Nigerians are now embracing Truth Social, where they can openly express themselves without fear of censorship or limitations.
