6 Dead, 65 Injured As Windstorm Devastates Jigawa

Jigawa Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed six persons killed and 65 others by windstorm in Kafinhausa Local Government Area.

Executive Secretary of the agency, Yusuf Sani, confirmed this to Africa Daily News, New York on Thursday morning. 

He said the windstorm wreaked havoc on the affected community and destroyed several houses, adding that the agency was conducting damage assessment exercise to ascertain the extend of destruction caused by the disaster.

He said the displaced persons took refuge with their relatives in the area pending when a temporary shelter would be provided for them by the agency.

‘Six persons lost their lives and 65 others who sustained injuries in the disaster had been hospitalised.

‘Our personnel and that of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are in the area assessing the level of damage,’ he said.

Also commenting, the Information Officer in charge of the area, Muhammad Umar, said the Chairman of the council, Muhammad Saminu, had visited the victims on admission at General Hospital, Kafinhausa.

Meanwhile, about three siblings and four adults have been confirmed dead in Lagos State following a two-day continuous rainfall that has also seen many displaced.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Zonal Coordinator for South West, Ibrahim Farinloye. disclosed this in a statement which was made available to Africa Today News, New York.

Giving a post-emergency phase assessment after the unprecedented rainfall of Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9, Farinloye revealed that about eight lives were saved within the period.

‘Saturday, 9th July 2022 have revealed that about that seven people – three children of the same parent and four adults – died as a result of the flooding that was witnessed during the two days continuous rainfall,’ he said.

‘About eight lives were also saved during the period, as a result of the flooding that was witnessed during the two-day continuous rainfall.’
