Social media has been aghast in the last few days. Somehow, people are either caught philosophizing, advising, ranting, and feeling pained about the state of morality in the country since the sex tape of two minors at Chrisland High School, Lagos, leaked.

Now, the Lagos State government has been drawn to the situation, issued a statement to condemn such an “immoral act,” said the incident will be properly probed, and whoever shares such a tape risks a 14-year jail term. This is the atmosphere at every doorstep. In every corner or digital space, Chrisland is trending. There are so many unanswered debates and questions.

It all started after a woman claimed on social media that her 10-year-old daughter was raped in Dubai during the World School Games that were held on March 10 and 13, 2022. She had said her daughter was drugged and under such an influence that the boys in the room told her to climb on them. However, she claimed to be unaware until the issue went public and sensed the school was trying to cover the case.

In her words, “As I was beating my daughter, she opened up to me and said the school threatened her not to speak out. My daughter was dying in silence and I did not know. Every day, I’ll be forcing her out of the room, but she doesn’t want to go to school.

“I’m begging Nigerians to help me because Chrisland attempted to hide the issue; they wanted to push us out of the way and my daughter was going psychologically insane. I need help as a mother. My daughter is not okay.

They took her for pregnancy tests without my knowledge, and lied to us that it was a COVID-19 test. They did the tests almost three times. Please do they require blood or urine for the COVID-19 test? I did not know until the whole issue became public.

However, in a suspension letter signed by Chrisland’s Head Teacher, G.I. Azike, on April 14, 2022, the school stated that the alleged pupils willfully participated in a truth or dare game that led to the immoral act after the lights out instructions in Dubai. The school has “zero tolerance for misconduct and improper behavior,” according to the statement.

While the probing into the case is still on, different opinions have clashed on social media on who should be blamed for moral decadence. Many people have blamed the school, the parents, and other people for the incident. Others have blamed the state of proper education, sexual orientation, and society as a whole.

One of the tweets read: “In as much as Chrisland should be very careful in mixing both genders and putting more measures in place, it is also the responsibility of parents to train a child properly and guide what they consume morally.” Others have pointed to the chunk of sexual content that has pervaded the media and has been accessible to kids—from music videos, films, reality shows and so on.

Meanwhile, in a Vox pop conducted by Africa Daily News, New York one of the respondents, who claimed to be anonymous, said: “Our environment affects us. It made us do things. We all came into this world with a blank slate. It is the things we take in that make us who we are. Therefore, society defines our values and morals. Both parties should be duly punished.
