Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has said that the Ever Given container ship, which has been blocking the crucial waterway for nearly a week, was partially refloated and has been turned in the ‘right direction’.

Chief Osama Rabie speaking on behalf of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) in a statement said; ‘The position of the ship has been reorientated 80 percent in the right direction. The stern… moved to 102 meters (335 feet) from the shore,’ compared with its position four meters from the shore previously.

Monday’s move comes a week after the container ship ran aground in high winds, blocking one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Russia’s ambassador to Egypt on Sunday offered the country ‘any possible assistance’, as the efforts continue to free a mega-ship that has been blocking the Suez Canal for nearly a week continues.

The MV Ever Given has been stuck diagonally across the span of the canal since Tuesday, blocking the waterway in both directions.
