There has been a worrisome neglect of the southeast region by the federal government. This is, therefore, the time for the Southeast governors to synergize and make out a plan for the development of the region.

It is no longer a secret that Ndi Igbo are grossly being marginalized in Nigeria due to the outcome of the civil war, and the fear of other tribes that Igbos are very domineering.  Those policies like the 3Rs (Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Reconciliation) which were meant to integrate Ndi Igbo back into the Nigerian society after the civil war were purposely jettisoned soon after.
A lot of other secret policies were made at the end of the war purposely to hold the Igbos down and keep them there. It is no longer news that the Igbos are being blocked from all access to the seat of the nation’s power. They are also being denied direct access to the world, and this explains why there are no functional sea and airports in the old Eastern region today despite the enterprising nature of the people.
Does one still wonder why the Northeast Development Commission is in place and being funded by the Federal Government in spite of the ongoing war and destruction in the region while the 3Rs were totally abandoned in the east?
It is pertinent to note that the more we wait for the Federal government, they are not ready to do anything they haven’t done for decades. There’s an urgent need to look for solutions to our plight as a people. Our survival is in our hands, and just like the way we proved them wrong when they left us to die after the war, we can still prove them wrong today.
Let us imbibe that Igbo maxim that says “anyuko nwamiri onu, ogboo ufufu”, for it is indeed only when we work together that we can achieve great results.
It is time for us as a people to work together for our common good. We must have to pull down the walls of division erected by our states of origin and begin to see ourselves as one people with common destiny. Let us remember “Igwebuike,” as there is unfathomable strength in unity.
Ndi Igbo as a people are ready and have the ability to build up our region because we are natural builders whose impacts have been felt by the host communities of anywhere we find ourselves in, whether in Nigeria, Africa or the rest of the world. We only need a development strategy to key into, and what will drive the strategy is a constant reminder of where we are coming from and where we are headed to.
This shouldn’t be a time for politicking, but a time to come together and drop our differences so we can build a region we can be proud of. Our Governors need to bring everyone to the table, and shouldn’t give rooms for our innocent youths to be killed for demanding justice, equity and fair play in the affairs of our people.
Emee ngwa ngwa. Emeghara odachi”! A stitch in time saves nine! Now is the time for our Governors to stand up and synergise for our common good.
