In another moment of glory, Nwachukwu Goodness on Thursday night claimed a gold medal for Nigeria in the women’s E42.44/61.64 discus throw at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

While doing so, Nwachukwu also set a world record with her throw of 36.56m.

In the contest, Sarah Edminston of Australia came second while Naibili Vanutisolo of Fiji Island took the third position.

In the men’s lightweight para powerlifting, Nnamdi Innocent bagged a bronze medal for the nation. The Nigerian lifted 132.5kg.

Gustin Bonnie Bunyau of Malaysia secured the gold medal with a lift of 154.6kg while England’s Swan Mark took the silver medal.

With the two medals won by Nigeria on Thursday night, the nation’s medal tally has now risen from eight to ten.

Nwachukwu before now was the F42 World Record holder with the best mark of 33.35m but on Thursday she improved on that distance with her first throw of 34.84m which she further improved upon with a throw of 36.56m.

While the Nigerian could not throw further in her subsequent attempts, she drew thunderous applause from the fans at the Alexander Stadium each time she took her turn.

In another event, Team Nigeria won a bronze medal in the Powerlifting contest through Nnamdi Innocent in the men’s lightweight category.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that this is coming less than two weeks after world 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan won the women’s 100m hurdles gold at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that she did it by going faster than the 12.12s world record time she ran in the semi-finals, however her 12.06s in the final wasn’t recognised as a world record owing to the over 2m/s wind speed.

Amusan had blitzed to a world record 12.12s in the semi-finals but obliterated that mark with a superb 12.06s to become the first Nigerian to win gold in the history of the World Athletics Championships.
