Former Germany captain Lothar Matthäus believes former players should be brought in to help Video Assistant Referees (VAR), following more high-profile controversies in the Bundesliga last weekend.

Bayern Munich clinched a 10th straight Bundesliga title after a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

But the VAR did not intervene after a foul in the penalty box by Benjamin Pavard against Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

It was a foul which made him felt hard done by for the second Klassiker in a row.

The German Football Federation (DFB) has admitted to the refereeing error and also said RB Leipzig’s Nordi Mukiele should not have gotten away with kicking at Union Berlin’s Niko Gießelmann.

Matthäus labelled the mistakes “decisions that are simply no longer acceptable” in modern football.

“The reason we as former footballers can assess this better is because we ourselves have constantly been in these situations over the years.

‘We know what it looks like when you foul or are fouled, above all, we see it faster,” the former Bayern Munich player stated.

Matthäus is however against abolishing the video referee. “That would be a step backward,” the 1990 world champion noted.

“I do think that, on balance, more wrong decisions are prevented than before, and yet there is still room for improvement,” he said.

However, in a similar development Nigeria’s cricket head coach has resigned on health grounds.

Sri Lankan Asanka Gurusinha resigned from his role as head coach and High Performance Manager of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF).

According to a statement by Taiwo Oriss, Secretary-General of the Federation, Gurusinha’s resignation becomes effective on June 20, 2022, “which is according to the terms of his contract“.

Oriss said the 55-year-old has had a great impact in the sport since his arrival in 2020.

“In a letter sent to the Board of the Federation dated March 31 2022, Asanka’s resignation is in connection with health compilations which will not enable him effectively conducting his role.

“In his short period, he has made significant impact in the game in the country, notably bringing in more discipline to the players’ approach to the game and establishing a coaching development template that has been rolled out to all Nigerian coaches.

“In accordance with the terms of his contract, his resignation becomes effective on June 30 2022.

“He will spend the next couple of weeks working with the Federation on a smooth transition and agreeing a plan with his coaching team on the Federation’s upcoming activities,” Oriss added.

The coach had been in charge of the senior men’s team as well as working with other local coaches.

During his hay days, Gurusinha helped Sri Lanka win the 1996 Cricket World Cup.

He will now return to his base in Melbourne, Australia.
