At some point in my teenage years, I chased popularity like a big-time whore. I chased it like a man wooing a deaf, prideful woman. It will precipitate some awkward lifestyle and decision that will alter drastically any meaningful progress.
Popularity would lead to unfettered “ass-kicking” and pandering to others who are perceived to be in that clique you intend to gain recognition into. It would also lead to subtle arrogance as you get noticed with time “only in your head” actually.
The obnoxious behaviors attendant with arrogance and pride will like a very bad odour seep through the ozone till it alienates you completely from well-meaning friends who tell you the bitter truth about situations and circumstances. Undoubtedly, you will be left alone with asslickers looking to start the same perilous cycle you have just completed.
There are about 16million Nigerians on Facebook and Instagram alone. I mean 16million Nigerians who use these platforms on a daily basis.
Has it ever crossed your mind that 15.5million out of this 16million Nigerians might have never heard about you and I at all in their lives?
They may NOT even know we king and slay daily on social platforms where we refuse to accord relevance to others because we managed to make uploads from “packaged malls with ice creams and shining lights at the background”
They may not know we have got 5000 friends on Facebook with less than five thousand naira in our bank accounts in reality. They may not know how we open fake accounts to beg for money and queue up dutifully for E-money’s giveaway.
They may not know that behind the six-packs and gallant body made lean with some effort to look appetizing rest pulsating poverty with the biggest sum in that account not close to fifty thousand naira.
But we are popular. Yes! Slay kings and Queens. And this has also blocked some of us from getting the much-needed help and support from others who with some humility would have changed the course of things.
Oh, Dear popularity!
Don’t let that huge followership on social media get you all cocky and overbloated. Popularity is relative and almost nearly insignificant in reality.
Does it not bother you that the slaying and kinging on your wall isn’t really the reality and as soon as a real situation plays out, you run straight to those you styled on and ask them to contribute for your medical fee, the joke is on who really?
The dopamine feel from the use of this mechanism created an illusionary show of importance in its wake. Feeding egotistical and narcissistic cravings.
Do not let that huge followership on social media get you all cocky and overbloated.
