Ukraine Allies Fear Disaster Near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

Ukrainian emergency services have been practicing how to respond in case of a catastrophe close to the Zaporizhzhia facility. The US, the UK, France, Germany, and others have emphasised the necessity of ensuring the security of nuclear plants which is at risk from the situation in Ukraine.
The four leaders also reaffirmed their backing for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s aggression while speaking in phone on Sunday.
There are already worries of a catastrophe as Moscow and Kyiv accuse each other of bombarding a nuclear plant controlled by Russia.
Africa Daily News,  New York reports that prior to Independence Day celebrations, President Volodymyr Zelensky sent a warning to Ukrainians to be very watchful as they are vulnerable at that state.
‘Russia could try to do something particularly disgusting, particularly cruel,’ he explained on a weekend speech.
One of the key objectives of the enemy is to humiliate us,’ he also said, however, we have to be strong enough to resist all provocation’.
On Wednesday, August 24, Ukraine will celebrate its independence and commemorate six months since Russia’s invasion of the country.
On Sunday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, US President Joe Biden, and UK’s Boris Johnson participated in a conference call to talk about the crisis.
After the virtual meeting, they advocated military calm near the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, where recent fighting has sparked concerns about a catastrophe worse than the 1986 Chernobyl accident.
The agreement, which Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted on Friday, will allow UN inspectors to examine the plant at a subsequent date.
The four leaders dithe noted that they had ‘agreed that support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression would be sustained.
On Sunday, Ukraine reported additional airstrikes, particularly in the town of Nikopol, which is close to the Zaporizhzhia power plant.
In the city of Sevastopol in the Russian-occupied Crimea, a new drone attack on Saturday attacked Russia’s Black Sea navy. A Ukrainian drone was reportedly shot down, according to the local Russian authorities.
In the past several days, there have reportedly been several missile strikes in Crimea, including one targeting a base close to Sevastopol on Thursday and another on the harbor on Friday.
At a Russian military facility on Crimea’s western shore earlier this month, nine Russian planes were downed.
The Invasion and annexation of the peninsula by Russia occurred in 2014, and Ukraine has promised to reclaim it. Kiev hasn’t admitted or denied its participation in the most recent strikes, though.
