The Kwara Police Command has refuted a video making rounds on social media which featured some police officers alledgly protesting the alleged default of one year salary.
The commissioner of police in the state, Mr. Tuesday Assayomo, stated in a message signed by the police authority’s Spokesperson, SP Ayayi Okasanmai in Ilorin, on Saturday.
According to Assayomo, neither the allowance of the special constable nor the pay of any regular police officer featured in the clip were owed by the police.
‘It is important to state that the concept of community policing and recruitment of special constabulary is voluntary in nature, meaning they are not on monthly remuneration like the conventional policemen.’
‘This much the constabulary were briefed before taking up the job, besides, the job is not full time job,’ the commissioner of police submitted.
He clarified that the constable exclusively receives state government-paid allowances.
‘Due to the complaints of the constabulary regarding non-payment of stipends by the state government, they were invited today for a meeting by the state government on ways by which their complains could be looked into.’
‘It was surprising that the same set of constabulary after the meeting with agents of the state government could go online with a video claiming that the government was owing them salaries for a year.’
‘Therefore, members of the public are advised to disregard the viral video as it was designed to embarrass the police and also to draw an undue sympathy from the public,‘ he further stated.
Assayomo said that the special constabulary is free to formally leave service if they so want.
With the advent of social media, rumors spread effortlessly making it easy to misinform the public; the Kwara state police command has disclaimed a video featuring police officers protesting over the non-payment of salaries of both the special and regular officers.
