The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has once more urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end the current strike and return to the classrooms in the interest of the nation.
On Friday, Buhari made the statement in Maiduguri at the maiden Special Convocation Ceremony and conferment of Honourary Degree of Doctor of Letters issued by the University of Maiduguri on Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, Chairman, Oriental Energy Resources Ltd.
Chief of Staff, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambari represented the president
‘It’s more appropriate that we say something about this ASUU strike because we are celebrating Alhaji Indimi who is celebrated hugely for advancement of quality education not only in this country.’
‘In this regard, I want to convey President Muhammadu Buhari call for ASUU to call off thier strike and return to classroom’.
The president claimed that negotiations had advanced and that it would be counterproductive for ASUU to extend the strike under these circumstances. According to him, the nation’s effort to develop its human capital is compromised by such a protracted suspension of study.
The first special convocation, according to the university’s vice chancellor Prof. Aliyu Shugaba, was held to honor Indimi for his contributions to the advancement of education both nationally and internationally.
To preserve the education sector, he appealed to the Federal Government, ASUU, and other university unions to end the ongoing strike.
Additionally, ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, praised Maiduguri’s calm atmosphere and said,’what I saw is contrary to the picture being painted outside’.
Obasanjo commended Borno’s government and other stakeholders for their efforts in keeping the state relatively peaceful and asked them to continue their good work.
He congratulated Indimi and offered his compliment on the honor. ‘a self-made man as shown by his struggled to greatness in life’.
Indimi thanked God for the honor bestowed upon him and reaffirmed his dedication to serving people in a selfless manner.
