INEC Chairman Reveals Extension Of Voters’ Registration Process

As he caves in to the mounted pressures to extend the date for the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, Professor Mahmood Yakubu who is the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has made announcements that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration which had been initially scheduled to come to an end on the 30th of June, 2022, has been adequately extended.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu made this announcement on Saturday.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier stopped INEC from ending the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Professor Yakubu, during the Youth Vote Count concert at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja, on Saturday, said, “I want to assure you on behalf of the commission that the registration won’t end on June 30 for as long as we have you people trying to register, we will continue to register you.”

According to him, “in the last five days, we have registered over 14,000 Nigerians in this place alone. We have about 50 voter registration machines. For as long as you people have been trying to register to obtain your PVC, we will continue to register you and we will continue to make sure that you get your PVC.”

 

In another report, it has been revealed that some of the detectives from the Department of Security Service, DSS, Port Harcourt branch have detained a guard attached to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State for selling some of their sensitive materials.

INEC had also made confirmations that the guard arrested is attached to its Eligbolo Registration Centre in Obio/Akpor area office on allegation of extortion of money from members of the public.

In a press statement by signed by Geraldine Ekelemu,Public Affairs officer for Mr. Obong Effanga, the Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, said, “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State can confirm that one of its security guards attached to its Obio/Akpor area office at Eligbolo Registration Centre has been arrested by agents of the Department of State Security on allegation of extortion of money from members of the public”.

INEC in the report had further claimed that it has a zero tolerance to acts of extortion by its staff and would ensure that the security agencies investigate this and any other allegations of illegality by its officials to ensure that every infraction is redressed and punished.
