Russia on Saturday claimed that the European Union (EU) and NATO are currently building a ‘coalition’ to ‘essentially’ prepare for a war with Russia over the ongoing war with Ukraine.

Russian foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, who made the claims while reacting to the news of Ukraine and Moldova officially becoming members of the European Union, claimed that the EU is not a military-political bloc like the NATO.

He went on to add that the development of its relations with other countries does not create any threats or risks but added that his country perceives the rhetoric of the union had been increasingly aggressive and “Russophobic.”

Lavrov said at a joint press conference with his Azeri counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov in Baku.

The European Union, together with NATO, is gathering a sort of modern coalition to fight, essentially, a war with the Russian Federation,’ Lavrov said, adding Russia will ‘monitor this very closely.’

Africa Today News, New York reports that this was coming after the European Council granted Ukraine and Moldova EU candidacy status on Thursday.

Meanwhile, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg has in an interview published Sunday by the German daily newspaper Bild,  warned that the ongoing war in Ukraine could last ‘for years’, while reiterating calls for Western countries to provide long-term support to Kyiv.

‘We must be prepared for this to last for years,’ the secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization said.

‘We must not weaken in our support of Ukraine, even if the costs are high — not only in terms of military support but also because of rising energy and food prices.’

He told Bild that the food and fuel costs are nothing compared to the one paid daily by Ukrainians on the frontline, warning ‘we would have to pay an even greater price’ if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to achieve Moscow’s goals in Ukraine.
