Nigerian Senate Gets New Minority Leader, Minority Whip

In a minor rejig of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Philip Tenimu Aduda (FCT) one of the senators who had been nominated for the position has been finally named as the new Minority Leader of the Senate.

The Nigerian Senate President, Ahmad Lawan had made the announcement in a letter he read during the plenary on Tuesday.

The letter was signed by the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Samuel Anyanwu.

Lawan also announced Senator Chukwuka Utazi as the Senate Minority Whip. The seat of the Minority Leader became vacant following the defection of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) from the PDP.

The Nigerian Senate has received the executive communication with the nomination of six names as replacements for ministers that resigned to contest the presidential election.

In a letter that was read by the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawa,n on Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari said the nominees would replace the former ministers that resigned from his cabinet.

The letter read: “In accordance with Section 8 Subsection 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, I hereby forward the underlisted ministerial nominees for your confirmation.”

The nominees are:

Henry Ikechukwu Ikoh – Abia State
Umana Okon Umana – Akwa Ibom State
Egwumakama Joseph Nkama – Ebonyi State
Goodluck Nnana Opiah – Imo State
Umar Ibrahim El-Yakub – Kano State
Ademola Adewole Adegoroye – Ondo State
Odum Odih – Rivers State

In another report, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has finally submitted their full list of the last draw of the Senatorial Candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC for scrutinisation.

Africa Daily News, New York who got a sight of the list have reported that there are 15 candidates who are either ex-governors or incumbent governors jostling for some of the prime positions.

The Majority Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, is also one of those who is seeking for re-election to the Senate. He had served as Governor of Abia State from 1999-2007.

The former Governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio who ruled from 2007-2015 was in the 8th Assembly. He had also lost his re-election bid but was compensated with Ministerial slot, a position he resigned from to contest for Presidential ticket of the APC. At the convention, Mr Akpabio stepdown and endorsed Bola Tinubu, the eventual winner of the primary.
