Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed who is the Bauchi State governor has announced that celebrating Democracy Day in the country is very important because the democratic governance has been firmly rooted and has come to stay in Nigeria.

The Governor made the declaration in his goodwill message to mark this year’s Democracy Day, asserting that there is no better alternative to democracy as a form of government that gives the people the right to choose who to govern them and how they want to be governed.

“That we are today celebrating the 23rd Democracy Day is a testimony to the fact that democratic governance has not only been firmly rooted but has also come to stay in Nigeria.

“There is no better alternative to democracy as a form of government that gives the people the right to choose who to govern them and how they want to be governed.

“It is this democratic right of choice that puts elected governments at both the national and the state levels on their toes so as not to incur the wrath of the electorate by being voted out of power during the period of elections,” he stated.

According to Governor Mohammed, since coming on board in 2019 “courtesy of the mandate given to us by the good people of Bauchi State”, the administration had justified the confidence reposed in him by executing various developmental projects for the social-economic wellbeing of the people of the State.

The governor listed security, infrastructure, agriculture, education, empowerment and healthcare delivery as some of the areas his administration had made impacts on the lives of the people of Bauchi State.

While noting that protection of lives and property of people is the primary responsibility of the government, Mohammed said his administration had ensured security as well as guaranteed peace and tranquility in the State.

“To ensure prompt response to emergencies, as well as for the maintenance of peace, the State government procured 50 units of operational patrol vehicles to security agencies in the State. To this end, we have been working in synergy with security agencies,” the Governor stated.

He, however, noted that despite these efforts, some undesirable elements were trying to cause confusion and disorder in the State, citing recent communal disturbances at Gudun Sayawa, Gudun Hausawa and Yelwa in Bauchi Local Government and Warji in Warji Local Government as instances.

Appealing for eternal vigilance by the people, the governor revealed that, “a committee has been appointed to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the disturbances and identify those behind them with a view to meting out appropriate penalty against them.”

Mohammed then submitted that “the successfully primary elections of all political parties was a testimony of the entrenchment of democratic values and norms in our political system.”

“It is my hope that this attribute would be replicated during the 2023 general elections. I appeal to political parties and contestants of various elective offices to prevail on their members and supporters to be law abiding and peaceful in the conduct of their electioneering campaigns,” he pleaded.
