The suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, has regained his freedom after he was released on bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This development was confirmed to reporters by EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that the EFCC had on May 16 arrested Idris over an ₦80 billion fraud.

He was arrested after failing to honour the commission’s invitations to respond to issues connected to the fraudulent act, the EFCC said.

After his arrest, the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, suspended Idris.

The suspension was contained in a letter by the minister dated May 18, in which she said the move was necessitated by the need to “allow for proper and unhindered investigation into the serious allegations in line with Public Service Rules 030406”.

According to the minister, during the suspension period, which is without pay, Mr Idris is not “expected to attend to your place of work or contact any official in your Office except for any disciplinary hearing that may be advised”.

In the meantime, President Muhammadu Buhari had already gone on to announce the appointment of Mr. Anamekwe Chukwunyere Nwabuoku to oversee the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation following the suspension of the former AGF for corruption.

Nwabuoku is to take over the position pending the outcome of the EFCC investigation of the suspended AGF, Ahmad Idris.

Buhari’s former aide, Bashir Ahmed confirmed the development on Sunday in a message on social media.

Africa Daily News, New York had earlier reported that Idris was last week suspended by the Minister of Finance, budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed.

His suspension came after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, arrested him for allegedly diverting funds and laundering ₦80billion.
