The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) received a major blow yesterday following the confirmation that a former Governor of the State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has officially joined the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from the ruling party.

The former DG of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s Support Group AbdulMumin Jibrin, who recently joined the NNPP made the disclosure via a tweet on his official Twitter page.

The tweet reads, “BREAKING- Sen Ibrahim Shekarau joins NNPP. Details later.”

Africa Daily News, New York had earlier reported that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on Sunday visited the Kano residence of Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, to reportedly finalise the agreement of Shekarau’s defection to the new but fast growing New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) ahead of next year’s general elections.

It was gathered that Shekarau was originally billed to officially announce his defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday but the plan was shelved for an undisclosed reason.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had paid Shekarau a visit on Friday night reportedly to forestall the defection after which both of them were summoned to Abuja, but Shekarau shunned the meeting after he reportedly gathered that it was not the presidency that called the peace parley.

However, on Sunday, Kwankwaso, also a former governor of the state, arrived at the Mudunbawa Kano home of Shekarau, alongside other bigwigs of NNPP to conclude on the defection plan said to be scheduled for an official announcement on Monday.

Sources in Shekarau’s camp told reporters back then that at the point of those discussions, the defection is almost a done deal as all the associates of the former governor in all the 44 local governments have agreed to move to the NNPP.
