Woman Sentenced For 10 Months For Purse Theft

A purse thief met her waterloo when a Karu Upper Area Court, sitting in Abuja on Wednesday sentenced her to ten months in prison for stealing two friends’ purses containing valuables during a birthday party.

The convict whose name is Mrs Farida Ladipo-Ajayi, a resident of Aso B, Mararba, Nasarawa State had pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of criminal breach of trust, cheating, and theft.

However, the judge, Hassan Ishaq granted the convict an option of an N25,000 fine, ordered her to pay a sum of ₦37,000 as compensation, and warned her to desist from committing the crime.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Olarewaju Osho told the court that the victims (complainants), Andrew Aloysius and Felicia Levi of Nyanya, Abuja reported the matter at the Nyanya Police Station on April 5.

“The complainants had alleged that sometime in Feb., They attended a birthday party at ‘Emzy Garden’, Nyanya with the convict and in the process, they entrusted a purse containing valuables to her.

“According to the complainants, the convict, who had the intention of stealing absconded to an unknown place with the purse, until she was traced and arrested on April 5.

“The valuables in the stolen purse include; a Tecno cell phone, valued at ₦30,000 and a cash of N7,000”, Osho said.

The prosecutor added that during the police investigation, the convict confessed to the crime and to have sold the phone at the rate of ₦6,000 and converted the money to her own personal use.

He said the offense contravened sections 312 and 287 of the Penal Code.
