Russian attacks on Sunday destroyed an oil refinery in the Poltava region and targeted “critical infrastructure”, possibly oil facilities, near the port city of Odesa, local officials reported.

Several Ukrainian Black Sea ports, including Mykolaiv and Mariupol, have also been attacked by Russian forces.

In the event that the proposal is adopted, Russia would get a land corridor connecting Crimea and Transniestria, a Russian-speaking breakaway province of Moldova that currently hosts Russian troops.

Attacks have targeted oil facilities. The only fully functional oil refinery in Ukraine is in Kremenchuk, 250 kilometers (150 miles) southeast of Kyiv along the Dnipro river.

On Saturday, Dmytro Lunin, the governor of the Poltava region, said that a rocket attack had destroyed the refinery.

“The fire at the refinery has been extinguished but the facility has been completely destroyed and can no longer function”, he explained.

Ukraine’s defence effort could be harmed by losing the facility, which processed 3.2 million tonnes of oil last year.

Mykolaiv was also hit by rockets, a member of the interior ministry said.

A missile attack has occurred on “critical infrastructure,” according to Vladyslav Nazarov, a member of Ukraine’s Southern Operational Command.

The grey sky was filled with two thick columns of black smoke.

“All systems and structures are working. No casualties have been reported,” Nazarova concluded.

The situation in Odesa has been described by the mayor as “under control”, nothing that: “Homes, civilian infrastructure, roofs have suffered damage”.

‘Vika’, a local resident who didn’t want to give her surname, said her family woke up to violent explosions near their home.

“There was smoke, the children were in a panic, the windows were blown in, it was terrifying,” she recalled.

Apparently, Russia is denying attacking civilians.

As a part of a “special military operation” to “denazify” and demilitarise its neighbour, Russia invaded Ukraine on the 24th of February.
