Women in very large numbers on Tuesday stormed the National Assembly following the rejection of women-related bills by the members of the legislature two weeks ago.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that last week, women who came under the aegis of Nigerian Women Groups, had protested against the action of the lawmakers.

They had also promised to return if the decision was not reversed.

They made good their promise as they returned in larger numbers, on Tuesday, promising to continue the protest until the lawmakers bowed to their demands.

They said the marginalisation suffered by women must stop in the country.

They also demanded an apology from the lawmakers, vowing to get the names of those who voted against the bills and publish their names for the world to see.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has called on women to use the 2022 International Women’s Day to protest against the gender policy of the All Progressives Congress controlled Federal Government.

Wike gave the charge at the civic reception organised in his honour by the Ekpeye ethnic nation at St Peter Catholic School field, Ahoada, in Ahoada East Local Government Area of the State last Saturday.

The governor claimed that it was an APC controlled National Assembly that actually rejected the five gender bills that would have give women more opportunities in the political landscape.

According to him, the APC members, who are in majority in the National Assembly, are unwilling to amend the country’s constitution in order to give women requisite political opportunities.

Wike urged women to keep pace with their demand for legislative rights and used the occasion of the International Women’s Day to further demand for roles they should play in political administration in the country.
