President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, asserted that Nigerians would have been trekking the Lagos-Ibadan rail was not completed.

Buhari made this assertion when he spoke at a meeting with a delegation from Kaduna led by Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, and Deputy Governor, Hadiza Balaraba.

The President said despite dwindling resources, his resolve was to deal with infrastructure deficit.

Buhari stressed that no country can advance without road, rail and power.

‘Nigerians are competitive by nature, and they will face their businesses when there’s road, rail and power.

‘The people from South-West can tell better because between Lagos and Ibadan by now, if we hadn’t done what we did, people would have been trekking.

Buhari thanked international community, ‘China and Chinese investors, who came along to support the Lagos-Ibadan transport projects’.

Meanwhile, Africa Daily News, New York had a fortnight ago reported that the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has clarified why the Federal Government of Nigeria has resolved to seek more loans from European banks to complete its railway infrastructures before the expiration of the current political dispensation rather than China which it was used to.

While fielding questions from State House Correspondents, after the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting,  regarding recent claims that Nigeria was no longer getting loans from China for its rail project, prompting the Nigerian government to turn its attention to Europe, Amaechi explained that the delays from Chinese necessitated the move.

Although the Minister did not provide details of the loans being sought from the European banks, he, however, said that of Kano-Maradi has received a favourable response from one of the banks, while that of Port Harcourt-Maiduguri is also looking positive.
