Oromoni Alleged Bullies Of Dowen College Student Granted Bail

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ court in Lagos on Tuesday admitted five Dowen College students, charged with the alleged murder of their 12-year-old schoolmate, Sylvester Oromoni, to bail in the sum of ₦1m each.

The police charged the boys, who are minors, with conspiracy and homicide.

The Chief magistrate, Olatunbosun Adeola, after hearing the bail application from the defendants’ counsel, ordered the defendants to produce two sureties each in like sum.

Adeola said one of each of the defendants’ sureties must be their parent and must swear an affidavit of compliance.

She also held that the international passports of all the defendants must be submitted to the court, adding that their residence must be verified by the prosecutor and they must stay within 2km of their residence at all times.

Defence counsel, Ifeoma Eson, Mr A.E. Amah, Mr Godwin Omoaka (SAN), Mr Eze Ajibo represented Begue and Mr Micheal Ayinla were in court for the minors.

NAN reports that the defendants were on Dec. 9 remanded in a juvenile home over the death of their schoolmate who was allegedly attacked in a case of bullying while in school.

Africa Daily News, New York had two week ago reported that three of the students out of the five who allegedly assaulted late Dowen College Student, Sylvester Oromoni have been arrested.

Hakeem Odumosu, Lagos state commissioner of police confirmed the arrest to newsmen.

This followed the report that over 100,000 persons signed a petition on the Change.org platform, demanding the immediate prosecution of all the culprits responsible for the gruesome murder of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, who was a boarding student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos.

The petition which was sighted by Africa Daily News, New York partly read, ‘On Tuesday 30/11/2021 we lost our brother 12 years old Sylvester Oromoni Jnr…He was taken from us from in the most gruesome of manner beaten by senior five boys in his hostel in Dowen College lekki Lagos State… The students are from influential families and the school is trying to bury the case.

‘Sign and help us find justice for Sylvester Oromoni Jnr. It’s our fight he could be your son, your brother, your cousin. #justiceforsylvester’.

Many Nigerians have called on the authorities to ensure justice for the late Sylvester.
