Aid workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo have disclosed that children have stopped going to school in the eastern city of Uvira because of a recent spate of abductions.

Speaking to newsmen, they revealed that at least five children aged between six and 14 were taken in June.

A 14-year-old girl was left dead by the roadside with a note saying she was killed because her parents had not paid a $5,000 (£3,625) ransom.

Another child was killed, one is still being held and two have been released.

Other children have been targeted for abduction – but have managed to escape.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that the aid workers have insisted that it is unclear who is behind the kidnappings, and that the police are doing little to help.
