Nigerians have slammed the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government as fuel price hit ₦212 litre.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) on Thursday night announced the new increment on its website, explaining that the increase was due to the market determinants and importation costs.

This is coming days after the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) promised there would be no price hike in the price of PMS in the country.

PPPRA fixed the lower band of the new fuel price at ₦209.61 per litre and upper band at ₦212.61 per litre.

The new development has stirred reactions from Nigerians who took to social media, describing Buhari’s government as a punishment to the country.

Many expressed concern that the increase in fuel price would result to an increment in food items and transportation.

Here are some comments gathered by Africa Daily News, New York from Twitter:

@Islimfit “Woke up to the news of PPPRA hiking fuel price to ₦212.61. It’s a wild wild jungle. That bad thing Buhari cannot do, does not exist.”

@Mayor_cyber “40k monthly for power supply, now PMS goes for ₦212 per liter. To be honest, this is demonic.”

@Austinokai “President Buhari will sell petrol at 500 Naira per liter, as long as he remains the president Nigerians should expect more. Buhari, a punishment on the Nation.”

@Oreakinde “The most depressing thing about this fuel news is that, fuel controls so many things, so as the fuel price is rising, so many other prices are increasing.”

@Letter_to_jack “Buhari and the league of Nigeria FC brought Nigeria to a total stop on Jan 1st 2012 because GEJ removed subsidy and was about to start selling fuel for ₦140/L. Today Buhari is selling fuel at N212/L, and dem no born anybody papa we’ll make e complain.”

@Emem “Nigerians should brace up for the incoming hardship that will hit so hard. Fuel has been hiked to ₦212 overnight. We’re still trying to survive the ridiculous food inflation, bottle water is ₦70, Coke is ₦120, even Eva soap is N250.This was the same reason GEJ was kicked out. Hike in pump price has a way of having counter effect on the prices of other commodities, increased standard of living, high transportation cost, increased inflation from manufacturers has cost of production will be affected hugely.”

@Unekue “I will reduce fuel price to less than ₦100 – Buhari, two days later same fuel price increases to over N200. When Baba says Good morning just go and sleep, the day has ended.”

@Iam_lammy “The most depressing thing about the fuel price is that it controls so many things.Nigerians should brace up for hike in transport fares across Nigeria which in turn affects food items.”

@Puremind_ “Buhari joined to occupy Nigeria from the 1st to 16th of January 2012 because fuel price was increased from ₦65 to ₦141 and made sure they never backed down until it was reversed to N87/litre. Today, under the same Buhari as President, a litre of fuel is sold ₦212/litre.”

@Holudaray “One sweet thing is, both PDP AND APC members, Buhari ‘s supporters and Loyalists will all buy Fuel at N212 per litre. On God, Gbogbo wa la ma je breakfast.”

@Ebelee “When Buhari entered seat in 2015, fuel was 87 naira per ltr, 6 years later and halfway through his second term, Nigerians are being asked to pay 212 naira per liter and No be say we no get our own oil o. Economy they crash, where person wan see money buy 212 naira per liter?”
