Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has said the National Identity Number, NIN, can be deployed in fishing out criminal herdsmen.

Ganduje made the remark while urging the federal government to ensure herders obtain NIN just like other Nigerians.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the governor said technology can be deployed to differentiate criminals from non-criminal herders.

He said ‘If we have data and technology, it is easy to do that (differentiate criminal herders from non-criminals).’

‘We should make sure that all the herdsmen are forced like other Nigerians to have national identification.’

‘Using technology, you can get the criminals out of them and get a lot of information from there. It is not all the herders that are criminals, only very few of them are criminals. Since they are all herders, you find it difficult to differentiate.’

Recall that Ganduje had recently called on the federal government to ban the movement of herdsmen from the North to the Southern part of the country.

Amid the herdsmen crisis, the Nigerian government has continued to pressure citizens to link their mobile numbers to their National Identification Numbers.
