Many women have made their marks in history. As queens, warriors, technocrats, housewives and chambermaids; the ancient phenomenon of giving a woman an inch and watching her fill a kilometre is still as riveting today as it was in the days of Marie Curie, Queen Boudicca, Catherine the Great, and Cleopatra.

Today, Kamala Harris is in the world’s spotlight as she recently became the third most powerful woman in the world. She became the third most powerful woman in the world by virtue of being elected as America’s vice-president, according to the latest rankings of a popular annual power list. The Democratic senator from California was catapulted right into the No 3 spot for her debut on Forbes magazine’s world’s 100 most powerful women list. She appears just below Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, and the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, who made the top spot for the 10th straight year, in the 2020 list published this week.

Forbes highlighted Harris’s victory as Joe Biden’s running mate in the Democratic win over Donald Trump and his vice-president, Mike Pence, in the November race for the White House, noting she will be America’s first female vice-president and the first person of color in that role. Harris, who was the attorney general of California before being elected to the US Senate, will be the first Black American and first Asian American to be elected vice-president.

The political ascendancy of Kamala Harris has led to a sense of hope for similar trends in professions in which Black women are underrepresented. It has also led higher World leaders to renew their commitment to helping Black women assume leadership roles in their fields. For many Black women in higher education, Kamala Harris’s election as vice president of the United States is a moment of gratification and recognition, a symbol of what’s to come and what always has been.

Amongst these women whose worth have to be recognised in their respective fields and careers would be the Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Diaspora Affairs, Honourable Cllr Osakwe-Hibbert who also holds the position of a serving councillor in Penn Ward, Wolverhampton, United Kingdom, the first black woman in the United Kingdom to hold this position.

As one of the foremost Nigerian women in Diaspora, Honourable Cllr Osakwe-Hibbert has used her position to facilitate easy living conditions for Imolites in the Diaspora. That Nigerians are not always having the time of their lives outside the shores of their native country is a fact well-known. As the fore-woman when it comes to Diaspora affairs, she has been tasked with ensuring that these overseas folks don’t lose their lives, dignity, or identity in their pursuits, a job that she has performed exceedingly well in.

Honourable Cllr Osakwe-Hibbert

As two black women in politics, they have very identical similarities between them which include political meticulousness and a diligent drive to serve their wards. During her time as the  District Attorney of San Francisco and her position as the Attorney General of California, Kamala Harris made a huge impact on the state with her various reforms concerning human rights, violence and LGBT. She was also appointed as the Chairwoman for numerous committees and caucuses under the United States Government. Honourable Cllr Osakwe-Hibbert, on the other hand, has towed this path and she is currently the chairwoman of numerous projects and commissions under the Imo State Government. Due to her hardworking, thorough dispensation of duties, she is always the go-to woman for recommendations and counselling when it comes to mega-projects in Imo State.

She has also carved a path for other women meaning to foray into politics in Imo State and Nigeria. She has done this by mentoring other women, holding seminars and symposiums and financially supporting various female-oriented agendas to help strengthen the foothold of women in Politics.

The Nigerian Government needs people like Honourable Cllr Osakwe-Hibbert in their ambassadorial team because using focus-driven individuals like her would help to boost the international image of Nigeria and further encompass the value of steadfastness amongst females in Nigerian and International politics.
