A third person who attended the Black Lives Matter protest in Melbourne has tested positive for the coronavirus.

There has been a spike of 18 new cases in Victoria, it was announced on Thursday, with just six in hotel quarantine.

It comes after the state confirmed on Wednesday it recorded 21 new cases in a single day.

A man in his 30s who attended the June 6 protest tested positive for the coronavirus last Thursday, with Victoria’s chief health officer Brett Sutton confirming on Monday a young woman who attended the demonstration was the second to test positive.

Victoria’s Health Minister Jenny Mikakos told reporters on Thursday the third protester was unlikely contagious during the time of the rally, but had worked two shifts at a H&M store at Northland Shopping Centre in Melbourne’s north while infectious.

The store is closed today and will undergo a deep clean while there will be contact tracing of any work colleagues impacted.

Ms Mikakos urged anybody who attended the Black Lives Matter protest to get tested is they experienced even just mild symptoms.

“This is about keeping your family, your work colleagues and the rest of the community safe. We are relieved that is appears most of the protesters did have masks and other PPE on,” she said.

“But we have made very clear, that’s not a foolproof measure. It is still possible people may have contracted the virus so they should take it seriously and get tested.”

The state’s total has now hit 1780, with 81 active cases.

New case linked to medical practice outbreak

Ms Mikakos told reporters a new case had been linked to the Croydon Family Practice, and is a close household contact of a previously diagnosed case. It brings the total of that outbreak to five.

The health minister said she had been concerned about the increasing number of coronavirus cases in Victoria in the past few days.

“Today we have two cases that are community transmission. Yesterday it was six. Obviously they’re the ones that we’re most concerned about, because it means we don’t know where the source of the acquisition is,” she said.

“Clearly we do have community transmission in Victoria.”

Ms Mikakos said Victorians should take the increase of coronavirus cases very seriously.

One-year-old child tests positive for coronavirus

Of the routine testing cases, two who returned a positive result are a childcare worker and a child, forcing the shutdown of two childcare centres.

A worker from Learning Centre Pakenham attended the centre for one day during infectious period and it will now be closed for the rest of the week.

The other is Guardian Childcare and Education in Prahran, where an infected child attended for one day.

That centre will be closed today for deep clean, contact tracing and risk assessment.

Another daycare centre was closed on Wednesday after a staff member at Inspira Kids Early Learning centre in Gladstone Park tested positive.
