Performing lawmaker representing Owerri North State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Engr. Philip Ejiogu, popularly known as Mr. Integrity, has denounced the increasing cases of rape and sexual assault in the society.
The lawmaker recently raised a strong motion at the House of Assembly which would help curb the menace of rape in Imo State and other states in Nigeria.
In in his words:
“Sequel to the increasing incessant cases of Rape in our society today and most especially, an earlier outburst of a gang rape case made by my constituent which went viral on social media and the internet; I was called upon via series of text messages and calls to look into the matter and do something about it.”
“This gave reasons for me presenting a Timely Motion on the Floor of the Chambers, urging His Excellency, Governor of IMO State and all other States in Nigeria to take stringent measures in handling Rape cases.”
“The ugly news of rape keeps coming by the day and you never know how many victims of this ordeal who might resort to suicide in silence.”
“It is necessary that both the Security agencies and traditional rulers get involved at this time to make sure that all cases of Rape are brought to the appropriate quarters and not swept under the carpet. It is also necessary that while treating any case of Rape, victims are left undisclosed to avoid stigmatization.”
“I made it an upmost priority that the VAP Bill (Violent against Persons) is given accelerated hearing on the floor of the House so as to be quickly signed into LAW.”
“I thank the First Lady of IMO State, Barr Chioma Uzodinma who held a match against Rape and violence against women on the streets of IMO, a very high sensitization of this discussed matter. That was a step in the right direction. Together, we shall all fight this deadly crime called RAPE!!! #OneWithGod #MrIntergrity”
