McDonald’s and two other UK restaurant chains, Nando’s and Costa Coffee are shutting down from Monday due to the coronavirus outbreak.

They are closing all their outlets in Ireland as well, until further notice.

Nando’s has around 400 restaurants across the UK.

“We have taken the difficult decision to close all McDonald’s restaurants in UK and Ireland by 7pm on Monday 23rd March at the latest”, the company said in a tweet.

Costa Coffee is however not going into a total closure as it said it would keep Costa stores open in hospitals where NHS staff will be given free takeaway coffee for the next two weeks.

“Staff at closed stores will be paid their full average weekly pay over eight weeks”, it said.

“We will do our best to keep Costa stores open in hospitals where we will continue to provide free takeaway coffee for the next two weeks to the NHS workers who are at the forefront of this crisis.

“Wherever possible, we will also keep our Costa Express machines available to serve you a great cup of coffee.”

Restaurants have been forced to shut doors or limit service to delivery and takeaway in many parts of the world in efforts to curb the spread of the highly contagious coronavirus.
