The presidency has reacted to a debate raging on social media over the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to allow his daughter, Hanan Buhari, to use the Presidential jet for her photoshoots.

For a man who has a “so-called’ drive for expunging corruption from the country, this comes both as a shock and surprise to Nigerians.

If a mere college graduate can freely access the presidential jet at will for party invitations, what else goes on in the Presidential Villa?

Hanan Buhari, who is a certified creative photographer with a first-class degree in Photography from Ravensbourne University in London, had flown into Bauchi to photograph a Durbar by Emir of Bauchi, Rilwanu Adamu.

The durbar was specially organized to avail the president’s daughter of the opportunity to take photographs of the traditional event as part of her fieldwork for her ongoing Master’s programme in Photography at the London university.

Miss Buhari’s visit on presidential jet has caused social media storm, with most people condemning the use of the Nigerian Airforce aircraft for “personal use”.

However, the Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu defended the action, saying the wife and children of the President Buhari have the right to use the Presidential jet for their personal engagement.

The President’s spokesman said Hanan received approval from her father who in turn informed the National Security Adviser.

“It’s true that a member of the First Family was flown to Bauchi, Thursday, on a mission duly authorised. There is nothing wrong there. It wasn’t an impromptu or improper trip, as it followed normal procedure…

“The normal practice, in existence for a long time, is that the Presidential Air fleet is available to the President and the First Family and four others. These four are the Vice President, the Senate President, the Speaker and any other person(s) so permitted by the President…”

About N8.5bn was allocated for the maintenance of the Presidential jet in the 2020 budget, and Nigerians had been complaining that the budget is too high.

This is despite the fact that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had promised to sell off some of the jets in the Presidential fleet due to the high cost of maintenance.

Only two helicopters out of the fleet of 10 was donated to the Nigerian Air Force while two presidential aircraft, a Falcon 7X executive jet and Hawker 4000, that were advertised for sale in October 2016, had yet to be sold as of 2018.

Nigerians and the main opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have kicked against the presidency for allowing Hanan Buhari, the last born of President Muhammadu Buhari to use a presidential jet for her private business.

Hanan graduated from a university in the United Kingdom where she studied Photography and graduated with a first-class degree.

Pictures of her surfaced on the social media on Saturday showing a group of people welcoming her to Bauchi, where she allegedly flew to via the presidential jet to take pictures of the durbar which was reportedly organised in her honour.

Amidst the criticism of most Nigerians, a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, described the fact that Hanan flew to Bauchi in the presidential jet as “the worst form of corruption”.

He went on to say that the action is “provocative, condemnable, completely improper and an unpardonable slap on the sensibility of millions of Nigerians, particularly, the youths, who look up to the president for integrity, uprightness and respect for rules.”

According to the PDP, the Presidential fleet can only be authorized for use by the President, the First Lady, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, former Presidents, Presidential delegation and no one else.

Presidential justification

However, a statement issued by the Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu on Saturday stated that the journey of Hanan to Bauchi via the presidential jet was a “mission duly authorized”.

He said: “It wasn’t an impromptu or improper trip because it followed normal procedure. The Presidency informed the National Security Adviser of the mission who, in turn, informed the Commander of the Presidential Air Fleet.

“The normal practice in existence for a long time is that the Presidential Air fleet is available to the President and the first family and four others. These four are the Vice President, the Senate President the Speaker and any other person(s) authorised by the President.”

Still, the PDP was not convinced with this explanation as the opposition party insisted via its statement that the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government should tender an apology to Nigerians rather than attempts to justify such an action.

Was the use of the use of the Jet really neccessary?

Miss Buhari arrived at Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, Bauchi on Thursday, and was received by the First Lady of Bauchi State and other government officials.

It was gathered that the durbar was specially organized to avail the president’s daughter of the opportunity to take photographs of the traditional durbar, Bauchi architecture and other cultural sites in the state.

As a professional photographer, Hannan Buhari is expected to document her experiences in pictorial form in her gallery.

Nigerians are not happy

Her visit on presidential jet has caused social media storm, with most people condemning the use of the Nigerian Airforce aircraft for “personal use”.

Hanan Buhari’s use of a Presidential aircraft for a private engagement is a public example of how Buhari has pocketed all Govt institutions for the exclusive use of he and his families.

Never again should Nigeria vote anyone into Aso Rock merely on the basis of “Poverty”.
