Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has inaugurated Advisory and Peace-Building Council for the state, charging the members to guide his administration adequately for effective governance.
The governor, at the ceremony in Asaba yesterday, said the council was expected to support the government regularly with expert advice and services without prompting, as its duties included studying the general socio-economic and political situation in the state and advising the government accordingly.
“The council will advise on issues that can lead to a healthy relationship among the three arms of government: executive, legislature and judiciary.
“It will also study the causes of conflicts among various communities in the state and advise on measures to effectively mitigate them, as well as advise on appropriate peace-building mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of various peace programmes of government,” he said.
Okowa also stated that some credit for achievements would go to the council, just as he congratulated the 42 members, urging them to always work for harmonious co-existence in every part of the state. He appealed to the citizens to continue to cooperate with his administration to ensure sustainable development in every part of the state, adding that the government would continue to tap from the elders’ wealth of experience.

The council, peopled by eminent citizens, has Prof. Sam Oyovbaire as chairman. On behalf of the members, Oyovbaire thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in them.“We know that you listen and we will work with you and do our best to make our state better because you are a peace-builder,” he added.
Meanwhile, a member of the council, Rear Admiral Mike Onah (rtd.), has tasked Nigerians on making a difference in the lives of others. The former Chief of Naval Accounts and ex-chairman of Military Pension Board made the call when the Deputy Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA), Ochor Ochor, hosted some members of the council, including Paul Enebeli, and a director-nominee of Direct Labour Authority (DLA), Benedicta Osakuni.
According to Onah, money is not everything, but how one relates with people who cross their part. His words, “Jesus Christ is today being celebrated and remembered across the world for all his good deeds while he was here; not because he owned properties.”He pleaded with Deltans to always be kind with their neighbours, thanking Okowa for the opportunity to serve.
